This summer my studio partner and I were invited by a former classmate, now teacher at Boston Student Advisor Council, to do a mural project with her students as a capstone project for their summer session. The mural was designed in collaboration with the students and the owner of the building to depict Boston from a youth perspective in on a wall in the heart of historic Nubian Square. The project was completed over the course of a month from first ideation session to completed wall. This was an incredibly rewarding experience for me and Franco who have grown up inspired by the ‘Faces of Dudley’ Mural and recently have enjoyed an influx of amazing public art in the area, much of it by our friends and mentors. It is an honor to be able to contribute to this legacy and to do so alongside such an inspiring and powerful group of young folks. Their fresh ideas, love for their community and commitment to justice give me hope and shine through their work. It was also an amazing expereince to spend a couple weeks working with our neighbors ‘down Dudley’. We made many new friends and were reminded daily of how much our work was appreciated and how much it meant to the neighborhood to have some new color on the corner.

The process video below was produced by Stephen Merea of BPS.

You can find the mural at the corner of Roxbury St. and Washington St. in Nubian Square.
